Burlington Checker Club 3/08/2012
We held our regular checker session Thursday evening, some of us
arriving early because we were going to meet Jeri Rowi with the News-Record and
Joseph Rodriguez, photographer for an appointment at our usual Thursday checker
meeting to do a story about checkers. This article would feature our
senior citizens who enjoy the game and especially interview George Murphy a
remarkable 96 year old checker player from Youngsville. We had a good group of
players to show and Jeri interview and talked to everyone getting his story.
Joe took plenty of pictures and we were pleased with the article that ran the
following Sunday, March 11th. Mrs. Emily Murphy, George's wife made us a big batch of delicious
oatmeal raisin cookies. A number of wives were there and Gayle took the
below pictures. You can read the article and get a mental picture
of the checker activity and fun we have. Incidentally, Judy Currin, George's daughter
who takes him to the club meetings married Dr. Shirley Thomas Currin of Cary who
is a friend and classmate of Dr. John Webster when attending veterinarian
school at Oklahoma State University in Oklahoma City.
